The brilliant family therapist, Virginia Satir once said “Life is not what it is supposed to be. It’s what it is. The way you cope is what makes the difference.” Truer words have never been spoken when it comes to your credibility in your field or area of expertise. The fact is, being a published author, and having a book in print sets you miles ahead of the masses.
Many people are often disturbed by the fact that being an author makes that much of a difference. After all, many of them have attended years of college and have graduate degrees and important certifications; they feel like they should already be respected for what they have done. Whether they realize it or not, many people DO respect and admire them for what they have already done.
One fact that cannot be escaped, however, is that no matter what they have already done, once they have a book in print and published, their credibility will instantly shoot through the roof.
I can’t tell you how many times in 2009 alone, that my room was upgraded to a beautiful suite, not because I’m a Body Language Expert and keynote speaker, but because I gave the clerk at the front desk an autographed copy of my book, The Productivity Epiphany!
Ever handed someone a business card, and then silently thought, “they’ll toss that in the first trash can they come to” ? Start handing business contacts a signed copy of your book! I can promise you, they’ll have it for years and the chances of them calling you have just gone up over 500%.
If you think you don’t have time to write a book, nothing could be further from the truth. You can be in print just 4 months from now.

Why Would You Want to Be an Author?
In today's marketplace, having credibility is more important than ever. When the consumer is trying to decide between you, and your competitor, it will often come down to who the have more confidence in. In short, the person they see that "The Expert" will most likely get their business.
Being a published author gives you more credibility ( as shown by studies) than having "M.D." or "Ph.D." after your name. Furthermore, if you already have "M.D." or "Ph.D." after your name, the one thing that will set you light years ahead of other M.D.'s and Ph.D.'s, is having a book in your area of expertise.
In the academic world, one of the quickest ways to impress your peers is to be published in a well known journal. If impressing your peers is something that's important to you ( and sometimes this can be important) then getting published in a peer reviewed journal will go a long way. You would do well to keep one thing in mind, however; the general public...the people who will make up the majority who will buy your product or service...they could care less about your article in the "New England Medical Journal of..." It means absolutely nothing to them.

What does matter, however, in the eyes of the general public, is whether you are the author of a book in your chosen area.
Whether you are already an expert and would simply like to increase your credibility, or are not quite yet viewed as an expert, and would like to achieve this status as quickly as possible, getting a book in print and published is paramount.
Be watching for future posts on the importance of this!
Until next time...
